Written by Melissa Canham | Mar 12, 2026 10:31:35 AM

The 2026 edition of the Timeline Charts is now available.

Using market data going back to 1926, the charts show how major asset classes - including equities, bonds, property and gold - have performed across a wide range of market environments.

For a deeper look at the data and the full collection of visuals, you can explore the Timeline Charts resource.

They also explore key aspects of investment risk, including volatility, bear markets, recovery periods and intra-year drawdowns, helping illustrate how markets behave through different cycles.

Designed as educational tools, the Timeline Charts help financial advisers explain historical market performance, investment risk and long-term returns in a clear and visual way.

Financial advisers often use the charts in client meetings, presentations and review discussions to help illustrate the long-term behaviour of markets and the importance of maintaining a long-term perspective.

A Visual Way to Explain Market History

The Timeline Charts bring together nearly a century of market data to help advisers explain:

  • how markets behave over long periods
  • the relationship between risk and return
  • the impact of diversification
  • how different asset classes perform over time

By presenting market history visually, the charts help advisers put short-term market movements into a longer historical context, supporting clearer conversations about long-term investing.
