The Modular Reporting section library: every section you can add

Summary

  • What this is: A list of every section you can add to a Modular Reporting template, and what each one shows.

  • Where the data comes from: Each section fills itself in from the client's record in Timeline, so it only appears when the client has that data.

  • Your own sections: Alongside these, you can write custom sections with your own text, images and client details.

Description

Sections are grouped below the way they appear under "Sections to include" when you build a template. If a client doesn't have the data a section needs, for example no completed FactFind, Timeline tells you while you're creating the report.

1. Why Timeline Portfolios

These ready-written sections support a recommendation to move a client's investments to Timeline Portfolios.

  • Reasons to switch summary: a short explanation of why you recommend the move, covering cost and transparency.

  • Investment philosophy: how active fund managers choose their investments, as background to Timeline's approach.

  • Staying within risk tolerance: how Timeline rebalances the portfolio when the mix of growth and defensive assets drifts by 10%, to keep it in line with the client's risk tolerance.

2. Investment Analysis

These sections need at least one investment account for the client.

  • Portfolio performance: how the portfolio has performed over the time period you choose.

  • Returns: returns over standard periods.

  • Geographical diversification: where in the world the portfolio is invested.

  • Costs and charges: the costs of the current portfolio, and of any portfolio you compare it with.

  • Equity sector allocation: how the equity part of the portfolio is spread across sectors.

  • Asset allocation: the split between asset classes.

  • Holdings: the funds the portfolio holds.

3. Timeline Platform Accounts

For clients who hold accounts on the Timeline investment platform.

  • Client-level performance: a money-weighted return across the client's platform accounts.

  • Account balance evolution: how account values have changed over time.

  • Account asset allocation: the asset mix of each platform account.

4. Client Education

Plain-English explanations to help clients understand long-term investing. Some use fixed content and others use the client's own account values.

  • Growth of Wealth, Investing and Politics and Asset Class Performance by Decade: fixed explanations with historical charts.

  • Worst-case scenarios, Best-case scenarios, Min & Max returns and Average returns over inflation: historical outcomes applied to the client's own figures.

Historical figures describe the past and are not a guide to future returns.

5. Financial Plan Overview

These sections need a financial plan for the client.

  • Summary and Top-level plan details: the key figures and assumptions of the plan.

  • Your portfolio and Assets: what the client holds in the plan.

  • Fees and taxes: the fees and taxes the plan models.

  • Inflation and withdrawal rules: how spending and withdrawals change over time in the plan.

6. Financial Plan Charts & Tools

  • How your portfolio could fare: the range of possible outcomes for the portfolio.

  • Your cashflow plan: income, spending and withdrawals year by year.

  • How long to plan for: the longevity view.

  • How much spending is sustainable: the sustainable spending chart.

  • Plan comparison: up to three plans side by side. See Show the value of a switch: compare portfolios and plans in a report.

7. IHT Planner

  • Your estate today, Allowances used, Estate distribution, Gifts, Results and Year-by-Year: the client's inheritance tax position, taken from the IHT Planner.

8. Risk Profile

These sections need a completed risk profile.

  • Appropriate investment strategy: the strategy that matches the client's risk score.

  • How the risk score is calculated: a plain explanation of the score.

  • Answers: the client's answers to the questionnaire. You can also include Capacity for Loss.

9. FactFind Financial

These sections need a completed FactFind.

  • Income sources, Properties, Debts, Current/saving accounts, Investment accounts, Pensions, Expenditure and Protection Policies: the client's financial details as recorded in the FactFind you choose.

10. FactFind Non-financial

  • Basic details, Health, Tax, Estate planning, Financial objectives, Vulnerability assessment and Custom steps: the client's personal circumstances and goals from the FactFind, including any custom steps your firm added.

11. Other

  • Legal & Signatures: a signature page for the client and your firm's representative.

  • Client comments: space for the client's own comments.

  • Custom sections: your own text and images. Custom tags fill in client details such as names, retirement age or risk score. See Build reusable report templates in the Template Centre.

Conclusion

Pick the sections that tell the story you want for each type of meeting, save them as a template, and Timeline does the filling in. The more complete the client's record, the more of these sections you can use.
